The Sea, Opening Paths

A space highlighting the value and influence of the sea through the history of maritime exchange from prehistoric times to the present.

1. Prehistoric Era
Our ancestors settled along the coast, engaged in fishing activities, and began exchanges with neighboring regions through the sea from an early period.
2. Gojoseon and Samhan Period
Through maritime trade, they exchanged goods and culture, laying the foundation for the formation of ancient states.
3. Three Kingdoms Period
The Three Kingdoms and Gaya, based in the Han River basin, exchanged with China and Japan, accepting advanced civilizations and developing their state systems.
4. North-South States Period
As shipbuilding and navigation technologies developed, maritime activities became active, and the region grew into a center of East Asian maritime trade.
5. Goryeo Dynasty
International trade flourished centered around Yesong Port and Byeollando, and various foreign cultures were introduced, leading to prosperity in both economy and culture.
6. Joseon Dynasty
The grain transport system and maritime shipping system were established, and as Western civilization was introduced, awareness of the world expanded.
7. Opening of Ports and the Korean Empire
With the opening of ports, trade with foreign countries expanded, and Joseon transitioned to a modern society.
8. Japanese Occupation
Port and shipping infrastructure was expanded, but this was forced modernization for colonial exploitation.
9. Republic of Korea
Rising from the ruins of war, the port and shipping industries were restored and developed, growing into a maritime power connected to the world.
